Prof. George Pavlou received a Diploma in Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and MSc & PhD degrees in Computer Science from University College London (UCL), UK. >From 1992-1997 he was Senior Research Fellow and then Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science, UCL, leading the activities of the Network Management research group. Since 1997-98 he holds the chair of Communication and Information Systems at the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Surrey, UK, where he leads the activities of the Networks Research Group. His research interests include network planning and dimensioning, traffic engineering, quality of service management, programmable networks, policy-based systems, multimedia service engineering and communications middleware. He has published around 100 papers in well-known journals and fully refereed international conferences and has contributed to four books. He is also program committee and editorial board member of a number of conferences and journals; he was the tecnical program chair of IEEE/IFIP Integrated Management 2001. The advent of IP Differentiated Services (DiffServ) as the technology to support Quality of Service (QoS) in IP networks in a scalable fashion, provides new opportunities but also presents new challenges. Premium quality IP services based on Service Level Agreements (SLAs) need to be supported through off-line network provisioning, accompanied by dynamic mechanisms able to cope with unexpected traffic fluctuations. Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is widely considered as the technology to traffic-engineer networks in order to cope with expected traffic demand. DiffServ and MPLS can be used together to support multimedia traffic with stringent real-time requirements. This seminar will present a DiffServ/MPLS-based framwork for QoS provisioning in IP-based next generation networks that deals with both service and resource management aspects. A two-level approach is followed, with provisioning decisions taken with long-term perspectives in a centralised manner, refined by distributed dynamic functions that adapt to traffic fluctuations in shorter time periods. The approach combines the merits of both centralised and distributed decision making schemes: it is not monolithic, as pure centralised schemes, while at the same time it harnesses the dynamics of load/state-dependent schemes on the basis of guidelines produced with a longer-term vision. Both off-line management functions, operating in network management nodes outside the routers, and dynamic ones, operating within the network routers, are programmable since they can be manipulated through policies to adapt to changing or newly emerging requirements. Results that validate the approach will be presented, based both on simulation and testbed experimentation. Finally, real-world applicability of this architecture and further research issues and directions will be discussed.
