Christos Verikoukis is a research associate in the CTTC Access Technologies area. He got his degree in Physics and his M.Sc. in Telecommunications in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) in 1994 and 1997, respectively. He obtained his PhD from the Signal Theory and Communications Department of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, in 2000. In 1999 he was “Visiting Scientist” in the RAINBOW project of the ACTS, with a grant by the European Commission. >From 2003 to 2004 he was a research staff in Southeastern Europe Telecommunications & Informatics Research Institute (INA), Thessaloniki, Greece. Dr. Verikoukis has participated and coordinated National projects, as well as European and industrial funded projects.

The aim of the talk is to present an overview of CTTC research activities and to focus on the Access Technologies research lines. Furthermore, possibilities for PhD grants and Post-Doctoral fellowships in CTTC will be presented. The creation of the Telecommunications Technological Centre of Catalonia (CTTC) was approved in 1999 by the local Government of Catalonia in order to increase the number of researchers in telecommunications and to fill the gap between University and industry in terms of research and development (R&D). The CTTC opened doors in December 2001 and started its R&D activities in early 2002. CTTC aims at acquiring an international reputation in its scientific and technical activity. This reputation, shaped in terms of scientific production, will have its basis in the conception, design and implementation of R&D projects that must produce innovative results in all their development phases, both in scientific and engineering terms. CTTC must contribute as well to the economic generation and growth of the Spanish industrial context in the telecommunications sector, helping balance business and technological industrial activity. Last but not least, CTTC must offer a pre and post doc training environment in R&D, defined as experimental in R&D activities in telecommunications and as highly reputed both in science and engineering technology, and should contribute to reduce the existing gap between graduate training and industry. The Access Technologies (AT) Area main focus is on access communication networks, based on wireless, satellite, and wireline technology. The AT Area is organized along a number of research lines covering the most challenging aspects involving access networks, such as: cross-layer techniques, medium access protocols, radio resource management, multi-carrier systems, cooperative communications, sensor networks, and satellite access
