Dr. Thanasis Korakis obtained the Diploma and the MS degree in Computer Science from the University of Athens, Greece in 1994 and 1997 respectively and the Ph.D. degree in Computer and Communication Engineering from the University of Thessaly, Greece in 2005. He is currently a research scientist associated with the New York State Center for Advanced Technologies in Telecommunications (CATT) and WICAT in Polytechnic University. His research interests are in the field of wireless networks with emphasis on MAC protocols, directional antennas and cooperative communications. He is also leading the effort of implementing and experimenting the cooperative MAC protocol at Poly.

A novel idea of user cooperation in wireless networks has been exploited to improve the performance of the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) protocol. The new MAC protocol that is called CoopMAC, leverages the multi-rate capability of IEEE 802.11b and allows the mobile stations far away from the Access Point to transmit at a higher rate by using an intermediate station as a relay. Thus, instead of using one low data rate transmission, two high data rate transmissions are used, decreasing the amount of time the channel is occupied for that particular transmission. In this presentation, the CoopMAC protocol will be introduced first. Then, the implementation effort will be described. In particular, the challenges encountered and the solution proposed will be highlighted. Experiment results will be presented, and the future work will be discussed in the end.
