Η Χαρίκλεια Τσαλαπάτα έχει δίπλωμα Μηχανικού Ηλεκτρονικών Υπολογιστών και Πληροφορικής από το Πανεπιστήμιο Πατρών (1990), MSc in Computer Science από το Πανεπιστήμιο Rice στο Houston, TX (1994), ΜΒΑ από το Columbia University (2005), και διδακτορικό τίτλο σπουδών από το Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας (2015).
Στα πλαίσια των μεταπτυχιακών σπουδών της εργάστηκε πάνω σε παράλληλη επεξεργασία αναπτύσσοντας ένα σύστημα που αναλύει και αναδιοργανώνει κώδικα λογισμικού με σκοπό να εξαλειφθούν οι εξαρτήσεις βρόγχων έτσι ώστε οι βρόγχοι να μπορούν να εκτελεστούν παράλληλα.
Στα πλαίσια του διδακτορικής της διατριβής ανέλυσε τις θετικές επιπτώσεις μαθησιακών παιχνιδιών βασισμένων σε έννοιες και δομές προγραμματισμού στην ανάπτυξη αναλυτικής και κριτικής σκέψης σε παιδιά δημοτικού.
Έχει εργαστεί στο Von Karman Institute for Fluid Mechanics στις Βρυξέλλες στα πλαίσια της διπλωματικής της και άλλων εργασιών, στην εταιρεία Oracle Corp. στο San Francisco, CA ως μηχανικός βάσεων δεδομένων, και στο Ινστιτούτο Τεχνολογίας και Έρευνας στο Ηράκλειο Κρήτης ως μηχανικός λογισμικού στα πλαίσια ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων.
Από το 2000 εργάζεται στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας ως μηχανικός λογισμικού αρχικά στο Κέντρο Δικτύου Τηλεματικής και μετά στο Τμήμα Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Ηλεκτρονικών Υπολογιστών. Από το Μάιο του 2016 εργάζεται ως μέλος ΕΔΙΠ στο ίδιο τμήμα.
Από το 2000 και μετά έχει εργαστεί στη συγγραφή προτάσεων για χρηματοδότηση και υλοποίηση 45 ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων που αφορούν την εφαρμογή της τεχνολογίας υπολογιστών στην εκπαίδευση ενώ έχει δημοσιεύσει πάνω από 80 άρθρα σε συνέδρια και επιστημονικά περιοδικά καθώς και κεφάλαια σε βιβλία. Στα πλαίσια ερευνητικών δραστηριοτήτων έχει συνεργαστεί με πάνω από 50 οργανισμούς σε Ευρώπη και Ασία.
Τα ερευνητικά της ενδιαφέροντα επικεντρώνονται στο συνδυασμό ψηφιακής τεχνολογίας και αναδυόμενων μεθοδολογιών μάθησης για το σχεδιασμό καινοτόμων, ανταποδοτικών και αποτελεσματικών μαθησιακών εμπειριών που χτίζουν τις γνώσεις και τις δεξιότητες που χρειάζονται η βιομηχανία και η κοινωνία σήμερα, με έμφαση στο σχεδιασμό μαθησιακών ψηφιακών παιχνιδιών και την εφαρμογή της σχεδιαστικής σκέψης σε διαδικασίες καινοτομίας.
Τα ερευνητικά έργα υλοποιούνται από την ερευνητική ομάδα Δημιουργικών Τεχνολογιών Μάθησης (Creative Technologies Learning Lab), στην ιστοσελίδα της οποίας υπάρχουν περιγραφές (http://ctll.e-ce.uth.gr ).
