Development of a novel Application Framework for Fluid Dynamics based on PGAS languages
Computational Fluid Dynamics is an essential ingredient of current research in Engineering and a major driver for innovations in High Performance Computing. This research project aims at exploring the next generation of CFD codes for parallel computing architectures.
The race is on to achieve exascale computing, that is, computations running at a rate of 10^18 arithmetic operations per second, with the target date being 2020. Harnessing such a tremendous computational power requires a deep rethinking of software and applications; this research opportunity is steeped in this challenge. The main objective is to build a new software framework for computational fluid dynamics that will be:
1. Parallel, from end to end;
2. Interfaced with advanced numerical libraries;
3. Employing advanced software engineering techniques and object
oriented design
4. Performance-oriented and scalable.
5. Based on modern, highly parallefeatures of Fortran 2015, one of the leading PGAS languages.
The scholarship is financed by a US-based nonprofit corporation engaged in computational science research, education, and consulting.

Application deadline Ongoing
Award type(s) PhD
Duration of award 3 years
Eligibility UK/EU
Supervisor
Dr. Salvatore Filippone
Entry requirements
Applicants should have a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline, such as mathematics, or engineering. Scientific software development experience and knowledge of computational fluid dynamics are essential; previous knowledge of Coarray Fortran is a distinct advantage. The candidate should be self-motivated, have good communication skills for regular interaction with other stakeholders and with an interest for industrial research.
Funding
In collaboration with Sourcery Institute, a US non-profit organization for research and technology transfer. This studentship will provide a bursary of approximately £14,000 per annum (tax free), plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate for three years.
This studentship is for UK/EU applicants only.
