Tassos Stamatelos is Professor of Internal Combustion Engines and Director of the Laboratory of Thermodynamics & Thermal Engines (LTTE).
He was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1962. He studied Mechanical Engineering at the Aristotle University Thessaloniki, and graduated in 1984. He continued in the same Department following Doctoral studies, funded as a research and teaching assistant, and received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, (1988) from Aristotle University Thessaloniki. In the period 1988-1990, he served the Greek Army as a reserve officer of the Corps of Engineers. In 1990, he was elected adjunct lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aristotle University Thessaloniki. In the period 1991-1998, he managed a small research group in the Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics, Mechanical Engineering Dept., Aristotle University Thessaloniki, funded by European Commission Research Funding and direct industrial funding. In parallel with his teaching in Aristotle University, he also taught with a visiting lecturer’s appointment in the Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department, from 1991-1998.
In 1998, he was elected Assistant Professor of Transport Phenomena in Reacting Flows, in the Mechanical Engineering Department, Aristotle University. In his new position, he undertook the direction of the Process Equipment Design Lab.
As of January 2000, he moved to Volos, Greece, where he holds the position of Professor of Internal Combustion Engines in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, University of Thessaly. As the director of the Laboratory of Thermodynamics & Thermal Engines (LTTE), he attracted research funding from Industry, for computational, experimental and testing services. According to its mission statement, the Lab is involved in R&D activities on Applied Thermodynamics and Internal Combustion Engines, with special emphasis to Automotive Exhaust Aftertreatment and to the study and modelling of Transient Thermal Systems. Experiments and computations are applied in combination to improve understanding of processes and support the design and optimization of related systems. The Lab develops and markets to industrial partners in-house software supporting the design of a variety of Automotive Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems. He has taught courses on Internal Combustion Engines, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Solar Energy Engineering, HVAC Engineering, Thermal System Design Optimization. He supervised numerous Diploma and Master's Thesis in AUTh and UTh, also in the frame of Erasmus Programme. He has supervised 5 Ph.D.’s. He served as Chairman of the Department in the period 2005-2007.
His research interests include the Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Gas Dynamics of the Internal Combustion Engines, the theory, practice and design of automotive exhaust after-treatment systems, as well as the analysis and simulation of energy systems and components thereof. He is the author or co-author of over 50 journal publications on the above subjects, and presented an equivalent number of papers at international conferences. He is a regular reviewer in numerous scientific journals in his specialization areas and has regularly refereed papers and served as session chairman in various international conferences. He communicates in the English, German and French languages.
