This is the first foundational course in physics covering introductory classical mechanics as well as some elements of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. The course covers the following topics: Motion Along a Line and on a Curve, Motion in Two or Three Dimensions, Newton’s Laws of Motion and Applications, Work and Kinetic Energy, Potential Energy and Energy Conservation, Momentum, Impulse, and Collisions, Rotation of Rigid Bodies,, Dynamics of Rotational Motion, Equilibrium and Elasticity, Gravitation, Periodic Motion, Introduction to Fluid Mechanics, Introduction to Thermodynamics.
Upon successful completion of the course the students should reach a level that will enable them to:
- Understand the basic concepts that apply in phenomena of the mechanical universe, mostly governed by the laws of classical mechanics, including an introduction to fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.
- Apply this knowledge in solving complex exercises
- Combine knowledge and appreciatetheir interconnects
- Think critically and invoke acquired knowledge in explaining everyday life phenomena governed by the laws of classical mechanics
- Work collaboratively and productively with their fellow students in solving assigned problems, carrying out term-projects
