    • Learning Outcomes

    The course offers an introduction to measurement systems and technology with special emphasis to electrical measurements. More specifically:
    Introduction to metrology: Unit systems. Primary & Secondary standards.
    Errors: Systematic and random errors. Composite errors. Error propagation.
    Instrumentation: Fundamentals of most common instruments used in electrical measurements. Classes and Categories.
    Bridge arrangements: AC & DC. Applications
    Electrical measurements. Voltage. Current. Resistance. Reactance. Inductance. Power in DC & AC, single – phase & three – phase systems. Voltage & current transformers.
    Special measurements: EM fields in substations / power lines. Grounding resistance. Fault loop.
    Digital instruments: ADC & DAC. Signal conditioning. Loading effect. Data acquisition systems.

    This is an introductory course to measurements systems with emphasis to the instruments and systems used in electrical measurements

    • Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
    • Know the unit systems and standard units and their relationships
    • Identify instruments and arrangements used in electrical unit measurements
    • Choose the appropriate device/arrangement for each measurement
    • Identity, understand and evaluate instrument characteristics and specifications
    • Identify error sources and compensate, correct, evaluate errors
    • Interpret and evaluate measurements
    • Design measurement systems and evaluate their performance
