Fundamentals of a.c. systems. Vector representation of Resistance – Conductance, Voltage and Current in 1-phase and 3-phase circuits. Power in 1-phase and 3-phase circuits. Fundamentals of power systems. The concepts of real, reactive and complex power.

Structure of electric. Carrying capacity. Operating characteristics of power systems. Analysis and modeling of key components of power systems. Per unit (pu) system. Symmetric systems, equivalent circuits of generators, motors, loads, transformers and transmission lines.

Analysis and modeling of interconnected power systems, 1-phase equivalent. Charts resistance. Single lined diagrams. Solving circuits in the pu system.
Load flow analysis, the admittance (YBUS) and resistance (ZBUS) matrices. Reduced order equivalent systems, mathematical model of the system in steady state operation and application of methods Gauss-Seidel and Newton – Raphson to solve the load flow equations.

This course is a basic introductory course on the concepts and structure of power systems. The material of the course aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of power systems, the structure of electrical systems, the operating characteristics of electrical systems and analysis and models of basic components of power systems.
It also refers to introductory concepts of interconnected electricity and power systems, so that the student will acquire an overall understanding of the procedures and methodologies for analyzing and resolving an electrical circuit. In this sense, the course is the basis on which specific methodologies and techniques of electrical and power systems are developed in individual special courses.
Finally, the aim of the course is to promote understanding of the importance of the electrical systems in the modern economy.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • understand the basic and critical characteristics of electrical and power systems, their connection with the overall production, transmission and distribution of electrical energy.
  • apply tools and techniques to analyze and solve load flow problems and power circuits
  • Analyze and calculate the basic elements of an electrical/power system.
  • Work with the fellow students to create and present a team project in a power system study including system analysis, distribution load flow, stability, and basic mathematical models of a power system
