The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering belongs to the School of Engineering of the University of Thessaly. It was founded in March 2000 and accepted its first students in September of the same year. In June 2003, the department was granted administrative independence. Annual enrollment is approximately 135 undergraduates, including transfer and special status students, and 25-35 graduate students.

The mission of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is to promote the advancement of electrical, communication and computer science and engineering through education and research. Furthermore, by providing educational, training and research opportunities in these disciplines, the department aims to fully prepare its graduates for successful careers in their chosen field or the continuation of their research in other top institutions.

To that end, the department offers a constantly evolving five-year undergraduate program that covers a vast range of topics in Informatics and Telecommunication, allowing students to specialize in any of the following fields:

(a) Fundamentals and Applications of Computer Science
(b) Software Engineering and Information Systems
(c) Hardware and Computer Architecture
(d) Signals, Telecommunication and Networks

At the same time, the department offers joint courses in business administration, entrepreneurship and didactics in order to further enhance its graduates’ job market skills. For more information on, please visit the sections on Career Opportunities.

In addition, the Department offers a Graduate Program that leads to either a Graduate Diploma of Specialization (GDS) –equivalent to Master’s Degree– or a Doctoral Degree (PhD). The graduate program places emphasis on theoretical and applied research in the following areas of specialization:

(a) Software Engineering and Information Systems
(b) Signals, Telecommunication and Networks
(c) Hardware and Computer Architecture
