Honorary Doctorate
May 2018
Vangelis Papathanassiou (1943–2022) was an Academy Award-winning composer and a global pioneer in electronic music who redefined the boundary between sound technology and artistic expression. His groundbreaking career was marked by a deep fascination with science and space, leading to historic collaborations with NASA on projects like the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission and the Juno mission to Jupiter, as well as the European Space Agency (ESA) for the Rosetta mission. In recognition of his mastery of electronic soundscapes and his advocacy for scientific exploration, the Department awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in 2018. His legacy as a “one-man quasi-classical orchestra” remains a cornerstone of modern musical engineering.
