This course aims at developing first year students’ reading comprehension skills on specialized texts, particularly emphasizing on the presentation and consolidation of basic technical terms of their discipline in English. Two other important goals are the practice of writing skills through appropriate activities as well as the practice of listening comprehension and speaking skills, through the use of audiovisual material that revolves around topics that relate to Electrical Engineering and Informatics.

The course syllabus is based on authentic technical texts, which are analyzed in terms of meaning comprehension and the specialized/technical terms they contain, whose consolidation is achieved through practice in relevant lexical activities in class. There is also practice in written discourse production on specialized tasks, such as summary writing, scientific definition and formal letter writing. The audiovisual material comprises authentic videos on topics that relate to the students’ field of studies and is combined with activities that intend to develop listening comprehension and oral communication skills.
Upon successful course completion, the students will be able to:

    • Be aware of basic technical terminology relating to Informatics and Electrical Engineering.
    • Select the appropriate technical terms of their discipline as well as the appropriate linking devices in order to produce cohesive and proper written and oral discourse in English.
    • Identify the basic structure of technical texts and employ the suitable strategies, in order to comprehend complex syntactic structures and lexical expressions.
    • Identify the central idea and minor information in English texts, so that they can take effective notes, paraphrase the original text and write a summary.
    • Describe and compare processes, write academic definitions and compose formal letters in English, within professional contexts that relate to their future occupation.
    • Explain the basic procedure steps and concept characteristics that relate to topics in their field of studies when they communicate in English. They should also be able to communicate in English (either orally or in written) with other professionals in their field, with the purpose of suggesting solutions to problems and supporting their opinion.
